Boys Basketball Playoffs: Einstein 81, North Hagerstown 72 (OT)

Joe Bradshaw scored eight of his game-high 32 points in overtime to lead the visiting Albert Einstein High School boys basketball team to an 81-72 upset win over second-seeded North Hagerstown in the quarterfinal round of the MPSSAA 3A West regional playoff tournament on Thursday.

The Titans (11-13) led by as many as 12 points late in the third quarter, but the Hubs (17-6) went on a 9-2 run to make the score 54-48 at the start of the fourth period. North Hagerstown continued to chip away at the deficit throughout the fourth quarter, and Teddy Schoeck’s layup with 6.9 seconds remaining in regulation tied the game at 62 and sent it into overtime.

Einstein took over in the extra period, with Bradshaw hitting two of his game-high six 3-point shots and senior Josh Ogburn scoring seven of his 22 points in overtime.

Senior forward Andrew Yacyk, a Liberty University baseball recruit, led the Hubs in scoring with 23 points.

The Titans, who beat Watkins Mill in the first round, have won seven of their last nine games. They will play at third-seeded Urbana on Tuesday in the 3A West regional semifinals.

Einstein Boys Basketball Beginning To Stand Tall

by Eric Meany

Josh Ogburn

Senior Josh Ogburn leads the Titans in scoring for the second straight year.

KENSINGTON, Md. — Wins were hard to come by in Rich Porac’s first year as head coach of the Albert Einstein High School boys basketball team. Losing streaks of 12 and nine games were sandwiched around the Titans’ only two victories of the 2011-12 campaign, making losses like their 74-41 drubbing at the hands of Springbrook in the penultimate game of the regular season all too common.

“Trust me, it was hard last year,” Porac said. “When you win two games in a four-month sport, even practices are tough. It’s tough to motivate them every day.”

But even as the varsity squad took it on the chin, young players like Joe Bradshaw, Raheem Hayes and Gil Reynolds were gaining valuable experience in leading the junior varsity team to a 12-4 record.

This year those young players, along with varsity holdovers Josh Ogburn and Abraham Camara, have given Einstein new life, fashioning a 9-12 record (7-7 Montgomery 3A/2A) with one game left in the regular season.

Boys Basketball: Einstein 56, Springbrook 55

Josh Ogburn’s long 3-pointer at the buzzer went off the glass and through the net to give the Albert Einstein High School boys basketball team a 56-55 win over visiting Springbrook on Tuesday.

Blue Devils forward Isiah Eisendorf missed the front end of a 1-and-1 with 3.5 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter and Springbrook holding a 55-53 lead. In the ensuing scramble for the rebound the ball ricocheted off Eisendorf and went out of bounds, giving Einstein one last possession.

With 1.8 seconds left on the clock, Joe Bradshaw heaved a long inbounds pass to Ogburn down the left sideline about 30 feet from the basket. Ogburn turned and fired, and when the ball caromed through the rim the Einstein student section rushed the court to celebrate the upset victory.

Ogburn led all scorers with a season-high 29 points, while Bradshaw added 19 for the Titans. Junior Andrew Robinson led the Blue Devils with 15 points.

The win was the fifth in six games for Einstein (9-12), and their second in a row against Class 4A competition. They will host Blair next Tuesday in their final game of the regular season.

Springbrook (12-8) will host Gaithersburg on Friday.

Boys Basketball: Nick Griffin, 6 Others Nominated For McDonald’s All-American Game

Senior Nick Griffin from the defending state champion Magruder High School boys basketball team was among the seven Montgomery County players nominated Thursday for the McDonald’s All-American Game. Andrew Calomeris, Louie Brill and Eric Rupprecht from Good Counsel were also nominated, as were Jordan Swopshire, Ishmail Wainwright and Mark Williams of Montrose Christian.

A total of more than 800 players from 39 states and the District of Columbia were nominated for the boys and girls games. The final 24-player boys roster will be announced February 14, with the game scheduled for April 3 at the United Center in Chicago.

Griffin, a 6′ 2″ shooting guard, has committed to play for George Washington University next year, while the 6′ 6″ Swopshire is reported to be weighing offers from GW, Kent State, UC Irvine and Virginia Commonwealth. Calomeris, whose recruiting process was disrupted when he suffered a collapsed lung  last season and a fractured vertebrae over the summer, has said he will play for Indiana University as a walk-on.

A full list of McDonald’s All-American nominees is available here.
