Boys Basketball: Nick Griffin, 6 Others Nominated For McDonald’s All-American Game

Senior Nick Griffin from the defending state champion Magruder High School boys basketball team was among the seven Montgomery County players nominated Thursday for the McDonald’s All-American Game. Andrew Calomeris, Louie Brill and Eric Rupprecht from Good Counsel were also nominated, as were Jordan Swopshire, Ishmail Wainwright and Mark Williams of Montrose Christian.

A total of more than 800 players from 39 states and the District of Columbia were nominated for the boys and girls games. The final 24-player boys roster will be announced February 14, with the game scheduled for April 3 at the United Center in Chicago.

Griffin, a 6′ 2″ shooting guard, has committed to play for George Washington University next year, while the 6′ 6″ Swopshire is reported to be weighing offers from GW, Kent State, UC Irvine and Virginia Commonwealth. Calomeris, whose recruiting process was disrupted when he suffered a collapsed lung  last season and a fractured vertebrae over the summer, has said he will play for Indiana University as a walk-on.

Girls Basketball: Two From Good Counsel Nominated for McDonald’s All-American Game

Seniors Amanda Fioravanti and Lindsey Spann from the Our Lady of Good Counsel High School girls basketball team were among the nominees announced Thursday for the 2013 McDonald’s All-American Game. The final 24-player roster for the girls game will be announced February 14 during the McDonald’s All American Games Selection Show on ESPNU. The game will be played April 3 at the United Center in Chicago.

Fioravanti, a 6′ 1″ forward, has signed on to play at the University of Virginia next year while Spann, a 5′ 6″ point guard, is bound for Penn State.

The Falcons (14-3, 7-2 Washington Catholic Athletic Conference) are defending WCAC champions.

Boys Basketball: Princeton Day 84, Takoma Academy 73

Indoor Track and Field: UMES Invitational Results

Northwest High School swept the University of Maryland Eastern Shore High School Invitational indoor track and field boys and girls team titles on Saturday, with the girls totaling a meet-record 160 points.
