Girls Soccer: Top Seed For B-CC In Quest For Fifth Straight Title

The Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School girls soccer team will open the state tournament with a first-round bye after receiving the top seed in the 4A West region, the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association announced Monday. The Barons, who will be trying to win their fifth consecutive state championship, will face either Kennedy or Clarksburg in the second round.

First round games begin on Friday, and the tournament will run through November 17.

Girls Soccer: Wootton 2, Damascus 0

ROCKVILLE, Md. — Jazmyn Sollars scored one goal and assisted on another as the Wootton High School girls soccer team topped visiting Damascus 2-0 on Saturday. Alyssa Kopsidas also scored for the Patriots (3-2).

Wootton senior goalie Lindsay DeStefano made five saves to record her second shutout of the season. The shutout loss was the first of the year against a public school opponent for the Hornets (3-3), who had scored a combined 16 goals over their previous two games.

Damascus will be back in action on Tuesday, when they are scheduled to host Montgomery 3A/2A rival Rockville. Wootton will host Richard Montgomery on Wednesday in the first Montgomery 4A South game of the year for both teams.

B-CC Girls Soccer on the Hunt for Another Title

BETHESDA, Md. — For the Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School girls soccer team to continue its recent success and capture its fourth consecutive state championship this season, coach Robert Kurtz believes he will have to employ a new approach to suit the current roster.

“We’re going to go a lot deeper this year than we have in years past,” Kurtz said. “We’re probably going to play 17 or 18 girls, and we’re really really young — we’re probably going to start two or three freshmen and a bunch of sophomores.”

“We graduated a great senior class last year,” Kurtz added, “so we’re learning to live without them.”
