Girls Soccer Playoffs: B-CC Tops Sherwood In PK Shootout

ROCKVILLE, Md. — The Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School girls soccer team was locked in a scoreless tie in its MPSSAA Class 4A semifinal matchup with Sherwood through regulation time and two periods of overtime at Richard Montgomery High School on Saturday, but Denali Minnick’s goal in the sixth round of the penalty kick shootout gave the Barons the win and sent them back to the state championship game.

The Warriors held a 3-2 advantage after four rounds of the shootout and needed either a goal or a stop in round five to win. But Zoe Mesirow scored for B-CC to lead off the fifth round and Barons goalkeeper Angela White made a diving stop on Kelly Flamand’s attempt to send the shootout to round six.

After Sherwood goalkeeper Nikki Steiner couldn’t stop Minnick’s shot leading off the sixth round, Christina Romas sent her attempt wide to give B-CC the victory.

The Barons (13-2), winners of four consecutive state titles, will face South River (17-2) in the 2012 Class 4A State Championship Game.

Field Hockey Playoffs: Glenelg 5, Poolesville 1

Madison Lamanna

Poolesville goalkeeper Madison Lamanna played well on Saturday, but it wasn’t enough against the talented two-time defending champions.

CHESTERTOWN, Md. — The Poolesville High School field hockey team took an early lead but couldn’t hold on against the relentless offense of Glenelg, suffering a 5-1 loss in the MPSSAA Class 2A Championship game at Washington College on Saturday.

Megan Taylor and Dannielle Baker each had a goal and two assists to lead the Gladiators to their third consecutive state title.

“I thought we gave it everything we had,” Poolesville coach Regina Grubb said. “I thought our defense played well.  My goalkeeper [Madison Lamanna], it’s her first year at the varsity level and this is probably the best team that we’ve faced all year. I thought she had the stops, we just couldn’t clear the ball out at times.”

Hurricane Sandy Washes Out Two Days Of Soccer And Field Hockey Playoffs

All Montgomery County public school soccer and field hockey playoff games scheduled for Monday and Tuesday have been postponed in anticipation of the effects of hurricane Sandy, school officials announced Sunday.

Some schools have already tentatively rescheduled regional quarterfinal soccer games and regional semifinal field hockey games for Wednesday. The weather forecast for Wednesday is currently favorable, but it is not yet known what condition playing fields will be in after the two days of heavy rain that are expected.

The state volleyball playoff draw will take place Monday as previously scheduled, according to the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association.

“We still plan to conduct the Volleyball draw at 12 noon on Monday via phone even if it cannot take place in our office,” the MPSSAA said in a release posted on their website. “Team records for all 16 regions have already been gathered and we are ready to go. It is our intent to post the brackets, if the elements allow, as soon as we can after the draw is completed and everything is double-checked.”

First round regional games for the state volleyball tournament are scheduled to begin Thursday.

Field Hockey: Playoff Outlook

by Eric Meany

4A South

Emily Kenul of Sherwood and Anna Galeano of Blake

Emily Kenul (left) of Sherwood and Anna Galeano (right) of Blake may meet again in the 4A South regional final.

Sherwood (14-0) will host Richard Montgomery (3-8) at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday in the regional quarterfinals. The Warriors scored the most goals in the county (75) while allowing the fewest (6), boasting a speedy high-powered offense led by junior forwards Emily Kenul and Gabrielle Yore and a stingy defense anchored by junior goalkeeper Christina Ricciuti. Sherwood did not allow a goal in its last six regular season games, outscoring opponents 39-0 over that time. Their toughest competition in the 4A South bracket should come from the Blake Bengals, who gave the Warriors a scare on September 22nd in a game Sherwood ultimately won, 3-2. Should the Warriors prevail in their region, a challenging state semifinal game would await against the survivor the tough 4A East region. Leonardtown, South River, Broadneck and defending champion Severna Park are all strong teams with legitimate hopes of taking the state title. Sherwood won championships in 1980 and 1985, but has not made it as far as the state semi-finals since then.

Blake (9-3) will host Springbrook (4-7-1) on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in the regional quarterfinals. A 4-1 loss to Springbrook in the regional finals ended the Bengals season in 2011, but they are well positioned to exact revenge this year. Blake’s offense is largely powered by Maryland lacrosse recruit Caroline Wannen, who had 13 goals and 13 assists in the Bengals’ 12 games in the regular season. Fran Inman and Lillian Watkins added 10 goals each to balance out Blake’s offensive attack.
