Stephanie Weissenburger and the top-seeded Wootton Patriots suffered their first loss of 2012 in the 4A West regional final.

BETHESDA, Md. — Anna Rowthorn-Apel scored with 4:01 remaining in the second overtime period to give the Walter Johnson High School field hockey team a 2-1 victory over visiting Wootton in the MPSSAA Class 4A West regional final on Thursday, sending the Wildcats to their first state semifinal since 2001.

The Montgomery County rivals were evenly matched from the start, with the only two goals in regulation time coming in a quick burst late in the first half.

Senior forward Katharine Edgar got Walter Johnson (13-1) on the board first, emerging from a scramble in front of the Patriots’ net to knock a rebound past goalie Athena Sardelis with 3:10 left to play in the first half.

Wootton forward Allie Band evened the score 21 seconds later, but then neither team could take a lead in the ensuing 48 minutes of play.

The Patriots (13-1-1) had a series of strong scoring chances late in the second half despite playing short-handed after defender Chloe Morakis was send off with a yellow card with 5:45 remaining. But they were not able to convert on any of their five penalty corner opportunities in the closing minutes of the second half and the first overtime period, setting the stage for Rowthorn-Apel’s eventual game-winner.

In beating Wootton, Walter Johnson avenged their only loss of the season, a 4-2 defeat to the Patriots on September 11.

The Wildcats will face 4A North winner Catonsville (12-3) on Wednesday at Franklin High School in Reisterstown for the right to play in the Class 4A State Championship Game. Walter Johnson won its only state field hockey championship in 1989.
