Field Hockey: Playoff Outlook

by Eric Meany

4A South

Emily Kenul of Sherwood and Anna Galeano of Blake

Emily Kenul (left) of Sherwood and Anna Galeano (right) of Blake may meet again in the 4A South regional final.

Sherwood (14-0) will host Richard Montgomery (3-8) at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday in the regional quarterfinals. The Warriors scored the most goals in the county (75) while allowing the fewest (6), boasting a speedy high-powered offense led by junior forwards Emily Kenul and Gabrielle Yore and a stingy defense anchored by junior goalkeeper Christina Ricciuti. Sherwood did not allow a goal in its last six regular season games, outscoring opponents 39-0 over that time. Their toughest competition in the 4A South bracket should come from the Blake Bengals, who gave the Warriors a scare on September 22nd in a game Sherwood ultimately won, 3-2. Should the Warriors prevail in their region, a challenging state semifinal game would await against the survivor the tough 4A East region. Leonardtown, South River, Broadneck and defending champion Severna Park are all strong teams with legitimate hopes of taking the state title. Sherwood won championships in 1980 and 1985, but has not made it as far as the state semi-finals since then.

Blake (9-3) will host Springbrook (4-7-1) on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in the regional quarterfinals. A 4-1 loss to Springbrook in the regional finals ended the Bengals season in 2011, but they are well positioned to exact revenge this year. Blake’s offense is largely powered by Maryland lacrosse recruit Caroline Wannen, who had 13 goals and 13 assists in the Bengals’ 12 games in the regular season. Fran Inman and Lillian Watkins added 10 goals each to balance out Blake’s offensive attack.

Field Hockey: Sherwood 3, Blake 2

Sherwood forward Emily Kenul had two goals Saturday to give her 13 for the year.

SILVER SPRING, Md. — The visiting Sherwood High School field hockey team withstood a relentless offensive attack from Montgomery County 4A East rival Blake during a scoreless second half Saturday morning and held on to preserve their undefeated record with a hard-fought 3-2 victory.

The Bengals (4-1, 3-1) took a 2-1 lead when Fran Inman scored with 3:20 remaining in the first half, but two quick goals by junior forward Emily Kenul gave the Warriors (8-0, 4-0) a one-goal halftime edge.

Field Hockey: B-CC 8, Clarksburg 0

Helen Webster (left) of Bethesda-Chevy Chase scored two goals Saturday as B-CC defeated Ashley Wong (right) and Clarksburg, 8-0.

CLARKSBURG, Md. — The Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School field hockey team used a balanced offensive attack and stifling defense to defeat host Clarksburg, 8-0, in a Montgomery County 4A West matchup on Saturday. The win was the second in a row for the Barons (2-3, 2-0) after they opened the season with three shutout losses in 24 hours last weekend.

Madisson Tully, Helen Webster and Bergen Kasoff scored two goals each for B-CC, while goalkeepers Kiley Goodwin and Andrea Tineo combined for the team’s second consecutive shutout. The Barons also got individual goals from Liz Orr and Mary Clare Vicenzi.

B-CC Field Hockey To Open Season With Three Games In Two Days

by Eric Meany

After wrapping up the pre-season with a 3-0 victory over Bullis last Thursday, the Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School field hockey team had to do one more thing before it could begin its 2012 campaign:

Wait.

By the time the Barons play their first game of the regular season, it will have been eight days since the squad’s final scrimmage. There will be no break for the Barons after hosting Broadneck on Friday night, though, as they will be right back in action with games against Severna Park and St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes on Saturday as part of the Sally Nyborg Tournament at Roland Park Country School in Baltimore.

“We’re the last county team that plays a game,” first-year coach Ralph Goodwin said. “And it’s a long week, especially with the holiday weekend involved. Our girls are going to be chomping at the bit to play by Friday, and it’s just a matter of how do I harness that energy and have them not waste it all on Friday night when we still have two on Saturday to go.”

Holy Cross Field Hockey Seeks Fourth Straight Conference Championship

by Eric Meany

KENSINGTON, Md. — Academy of the Holy Cross field hockey coach Jenna Ries does not see recent weather-related disruptions or her team’s busy schedule as impediments to making the changes necessary to put the Tartans’ season back on the right track after an inconsistent start.

The message she wants to convey to her players may take some time to sink in, but her delivery is short and to the point.

“Simple,” she said. “Simple is better.”
