Baseball Roundup: Friday, May 10

Wootton 2, Walter Johnson 1: Glenny Woolschlager hit a two-out RBI double in the top of the first inning and scored on an error one batter later to give the Wootton High School baseball team all the runs it would need as the visiting Patriots topped Walter Johnson, 2-1, in the first round of the MPSSAA Class 4A playoffs on Friday.

Andrew Craig got the complete-game win for Wootton, allowing two hits while walking five and striking out seven in seven innings. Wildcats ace Gus Gill was sharp as well, striking out 12 and walking two while allowing four hits and one earned run in seven innings to take the loss.

The Patriots will travel to face top-seeded Gaithersburg in the 4A West regional quarterfinals on Monday.

Northwest 4, Quince Orchard 1: The Jaguars trailed by a single run going into the seventh inning but scored once in that frame to tie it and scored three more times in the top of the eighth to beat the host Cougars.

Next up for the defending Class 4A state champions is a regional quarterfinal matchup on the road against Blair on Monday. The fifth-seeded Blazers topped Clarksburg, 2-0, on Friday.
