Boys Soccer Playoffs: Northwest Penalty Kick Goal Waved Off In Overtime

With the score tied at one goal apiece two minutes into the first overtime period of the MPSSAA 4A West boys soccer regional semifinal game between Northwest High School and Walter Johnson on Saturday, the Wildcats were called for a foul in the penalty area in front of their own net. Walter Johnson’s players and coaches were livid at the officials over the call, earning coach Mike Williams a red card and senior Mateo Arenas a yellow.

Jaguars senior Curtis Wynne scored on the ensuing penalty kick, sending his Northwest teammates into a celebratory frenzy and seemingly ending the game. Seconds later, however, it became apparent that the goal had been waved off as the officials ruled that Northwest had encroached on the penalty area before the ball was kicked. On the re-kick, Walter Johnson goalie Ben Meyers stopped Wynne’s shot and play continued through two scoreless overtime periods.

Walter Johnson eventually won the game, prevailing over Northwest in the penalty kick shootout 5-4. Meyers stopped Ben Jacks in the second round of the shootout and Kyle Madden scored the game-winner in the fifth round to send the Wildcats to the 4A West regional final on Monday. There they will face Wootton, who beat Richard Montgomery 4-0 earlier in the day.
