J. J. Jan hit a double with one out in the bottom of the 12th inning to score Michael Coates and give the Northwest High School baseball team a 7-6 win over Arundel and its first ever state title in the MPSSAA Class 4A championship game at Shipley Field in College Park on Friday afternoon.

Arundel got two runs in the top of the first inning on an RBI double by Keith Grassel and an RBI single by Dalton Durocher.

Northwest answered with one run in the bottom of the first as Steve D’Amato knocked in Scott Ardoin, who had walked to lead off the inning.

Arundel added two runs  in the top of the third when Durocher knocked in Grassel for the second time in the game and Steve Ghiardi knocked in Durocher with a single.

Arundel scored again in the top of the seventh to make it 5-1 on Mike Heverling’s RBI single.

Northwest tied it by scoring 4 runs in the bottom of the seventh. Nick Siegel and Joey Moeltner had RBI singles and Tony Cianci knocked in two with a two out double to make the score 5-5. With two outs and the score still 5-2, Steve D’Amato struck out for what could have been the end of the game but he reached first as the ball got by the catcher. Northwest almost won the game on another strikeout/wild pitch with the bases loaded and two outs, but Max Banks was thrown out at first to send the game to extra innings.

Ethan Plummer doubled home Steve Ghiardi in the top of the 10th inning to give Arundel a 6-5 lead.

Northwest tied the game again in the bottom of the 10th when Nick Siegel singled home Adroin with two outs.
