Baseball: Northwest Tops Sherwood To Earn Spot In State Finals

Scott Ardoin’s suicide squeeze with one out in the bottom of the 10th inning gave the Northwest High School baseball team a 7-6 win over Sherwood in the semifinal round of the MPSSAA Class 4A championship tournament in College Park on Tuesday night.

Max Banks led off the bottom of the 10th with a double and was bunted to third by J.J. Jan. Adroin then bunted the next pitch to score Banks and send the Jaguars (15-6) to a berth in the class 4A state championship game against Arundel.

Colin McMahon gave Sherwood (12-8) a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning with a two-out RBI single. The Warriors then scored four runs in the top of the third on RBI doubles by Dan Johnson and Matt Chanin and a two-run home run by McMahon to take a 5-0 lead.

Jan led off the bottom of the third with a single and was doubled home by Adroin to cut Sherwood’s lead to 5-1, but an RBI single by Chanin in the top of the fourth put the Warriors up by five again.

Northwest tied the game in the bottom of the fifth, scoring five runs on five hits and one Sherwood error. The game remained tied at 6 until the bottom of the 10th, when Adroin’s bunt gave the Jaguars the win in their first-ever appearance in the state semifinals.

Up next for Northwest is Arundel, winner of 10 state championships but making their first trip to the finals since the retirement of coach Bernie Walter. Dalton Durocher hit an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Wildcats a 3-2 win over Bowie in the other 4A semifinal in College Park earlier Tuesday.

The 4A final game will be played at Shipley Field on the campus of the University of Maryland in College Park on Friday at 2:30 pm.
