New Coach Brings New Hope to Einstein Boys Basketball

by Eric Meany

KENSINGTON, Md. — The 2007-8 season was a special one for the Albert Einstein High School boys basketball team. Led by high-scoring guard Dennis Bassich, coach Ken Bunker’s squad posted a winning record and notched a first-round playoff victory in what was one of their best campaigns in recent memory.

Times have been tough for the Titans since then, though, as the team has failed to win as many games in the past three seasons combined as they did in that one year.

But with a new season comes new hope, and this year one reason for that hope is the arrival of first-year head coach Rich Porac. The 33-year-old Hagerstown native has had stints leading the junior varsity squads at Magruder and Blair, but Tuesday’s 82-29 home loss to Blake marked his varsity head-coaching debut.

Ice Hockey Comes To Holy Cross

by Eric Meany

Holy Cross sophomore Emily Bauer's dream of playing high school hockey is coming true.

Holy Cross sophomore Emily Bauer’s dream of playing high school hockey is coming true.

KENSINGTON, Md. — When Emily Bauer wrote on her application to the Academy of the Holy Cross that she wanted to start an ice hockey team at the all-girls Catholic high school, she could hardly have known how soon her wish would come true.

Bauer, now a sophomore, first played alongside freshman Emily Kennedy with the Montgomery Youth Hockey Association, and this past summer their fathers pitched the idea of starting a team at Holy Cross to athletic director Jenna Ries.

Ries gave the men the go-ahead, and with very little time to get organized, they have put together a 14-member developmental squad that will play a schedule of games against girls teams from Holton-Arms, Bryn Mawr, St. Timothy’s and Archbishop Spalding through February. If all goes well this season, ice hockey will become a full-fledged varsity sport at Holy Cross for the 2012-2013 school year.

Holy Cross Field Hockey Seeks Fourth Straight Conference Championship

by Eric Meany

KENSINGTON, Md. — Academy of the Holy Cross field hockey coach Jenna Ries does not see recent weather-related disruptions or her team’s busy schedule as impediments to making the changes necessary to put the Tartans’ season back on the right track after an inconsistent start.

The message she wants to convey to her players may take some time to sink in, but her delivery is short and to the point.

“Simple,” she said. “Simple is better.”

B-CC Girls Soccer on the Hunt for Another Title

by Eric Meany

BETHESDA, Md. — For the Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School girls soccer team to continue its recent success and capture its fourth consecutive state championship this season, coach Robert Kurtz believes he will have to employ a new approach to suit the current roster.

“We’re going to go a lot deeper this year than we have in years past,” Kurtz said. “We’re probably going to play 17 or 18 girls, and we’re really really young — we’re probably going to start two or three freshmen and a bunch of sophomores.”

“We graduated a great senior class last year,” Kurtz added, “so we’re learning to live without them.”
